Caravan Bankside

Address: The Metal Box Factory, 30 Great Guildford Street, London, SE1 0HS

The latest arrival to hit the foodie mecca Bankside is Caravan, the branch’s third London restaurant, and a weekend brunch spot that really is worth shouting about…

As expected from a Caravan restaurant & coffee roastery, it’s housed in an industrial-chic warehouse on Great Guildford Street, just south of the Tate Modern and the Globe.

The space was previously an old metal box factory, so as you’d expect, the décor is industrial-themed with many of the original 19th century features restored to create a lofty restaurant space of high walls, exposed bricks and steel framed metal windows.

The location perfectly matches the trendy and relaxed vibes of the waiters and diners inside, all finessed by Caravan’s own Spotify playlist delivering a nice ambience.

The restaurant only takes brunch bookings for tables of 6 or more, so for smaller parties they advise that brunch seats are allocated on a first come, first served basis for walk-ins.

On a Sunday, the place gets packed by 11am with couples, friends, families and tourists all enjoy a mid-morning treat. We were asked to wait at the stool bar for a table to become free, where we could mooch at the menu and enjoy a perfectly roasted coffee.

The wait for a table of two turned out to be less than 10 minutes, so we were swiftly seated, and the waiters were happy to recommend some dishes that we should try.

The hardest decision was choosing between my favourite brunch dish of Avocado on toast with a poached egg (£8.50) or something more exotic like the Jalapeño corn bread with fried eggs (£9.50), which the waiter assured was adventurous, but a Caravan fav!

What a great success! I’m sure the avocado toast is good, but this dish is filled with a variety of unique textures and flavours and is wonderful presented…

The smoothies are too good to resist to, plus help to add a spice of green to the weekend. I recommend the Kale, Banana, Date, Almond Butter and Almond Milk smoothie (£4.50).

Caravan Bankside is a great brunch spot, it oozes with charm, friendliness and interesting food dishes that are cooked to perfection. It’s a wonderful place to broaden your brunch palette and become adventurous on a weekend morning. Everything on the menu looks so delicious, just be warned that (like me) you’ll want to try everything!

Brunch menu: 10am – 4pm, Sat & Sun.

Brunch for two diners: around £25-£35 inc. service
