Madrid is often overshadowed by its northerly neighbour Barcelona, but it shouldn’t be underestimated as one of the top travel destinations in Europe, and perfect for a 3-day trip! I think it’s more unique than its neighbouring cities, because here is where the old and new intertwine effortlessly, meaning there is an abundance of historic sites, green spaces and world-class museums, as well as eateries, bars and a wonderful night scene!

As a city, it remains generally laid-back yet is able to retain an electric night time atmosphere. This is because the people of Madrid sure know how to live the good life. It’s  meant to have the largest number of bars per capita of any city in Europe, and it’s vibrant energy is contagious – as a tourist you won’t want to stop exploring!

It’s predominately a walking city, so it’s easy to stumble across hidden gems and charming neighbourhoods. I was really impressed with the amount of things to do, it is a city that definitely has something for everyone, and every neighbourhood has a very distinctive character. It’s easy to spend the daytime soaking in it’s history and culture, and the evenings sampling the local cuisine and enjoying the energy at night.

I recommend finding accommodation that is near to El Centro (the centre) and there are some cheaper options hidden behind the Gran Vía and near to the Plaza Mayor. I enjoyed being within walking distance of most of Plaza del Sol and the Mercado de San Miguel.

Madrid is the perfect weekend getaway, with plenty on offer and things to enjoy that are moderately priced. There is a wealth of architecture, culture, history, food and nightlife, so of course spending three days in Madrid might not be enough to take in all of the city, but it’s definitely enough to experience a taste of this wonderful Spanish capital!
